What many English-speaking musicians don&#8217;t know is that there are many <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Anglo-Quebecer_communities\">historically Anglophone towns and regions in Quebec<\/a> where you can not only find venues open to booking artists who don&#8217;t speak French, but also a music-loving audience wanting to hear you perform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/com-com.nsf\/eng\/h_01229.html\">areas in Quebec with sizeable English-speaking populations<\/a> (and a strong Anglophone arts &amp; culture scene) include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ariannerelocation.com\/french-and-english-neighbourhoods-of-montreal\/\">Montreal<\/a> (especially Montreal Ouest, NDG, Westmount, and the West Island)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.viva-media.ca\/en\/the-southwest-voice\/news-sv\/community-sv\/networking-how-to-develop-a-collaborative-english-speaking-community\/\">Vaudreuil-Soulanges<\/a> (especially Hudson \u2014 our home base, Pincourt, Saint-Lazare, Vaudreuil-Dorion, and Notre-Dame-de-l\u2019\u00cele-Perrot)<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/laurentianclub.ca\/\">Laurentians<\/a> (especially Morin Heights, Saint Sauveur, and Mont-Tremblant)<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/townshippers.org\/\">Eastern Townships<\/a> (especially Granby, Magog, Farnham, and Sherbrooke)<\/li><li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westquebecers.ca\/our-community\/\">Outaouais<\/a> (especially Gatineau, Chelsea, Wakefield, Shawville, and Farrelton)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also some small and friendly English communities near <a href=\"https:\/\/veq.ca\/\">Quebec City<\/a>, Grosse \u00cele (part of the beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebecmaritime.ca\/en\/road-trips-and-getaways\/iles-de-la-madeleine\">\u00celes de la Madeleine<\/a>). Even in predominantly French areas, such as Launadi\u00e8re (where English speakers make up only three percent of the population), there are English-language community organizations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecol-lanaudiere.org\/\">English Community Organization Launadi\u00e8re (ECOL)<\/a> serving a thriving minority language community. (One tip: anywhere you find <a href=\"https:\/\/qesba.qc.ca\/en\/go-public\/\">English public schools in Quebec<\/a>, you will find English-speaking communities!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Map of English-friendly music venues in Quebec<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s a map of some of the venues in Quebec who have been known to book English-speaking artists. This list includes festivals and theatres, but also many small and non-traditional venues: wineries and orchards, microbreweries, restaurants, and small-town bars and clubs. It is by no means a comprehensive list, and we have not personally visited all these venues \u2014 they are places we&#8217;ve heard about through word-of-mouth or discovered online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/viewer?mid=1DdxbcP1PFkGD4E4a-RXaerN2tA0n1pua&amp;ll=46.62215115596696%2C-71.17072314999999&amp;z=7\">Expand the map<\/a> to filter by category: theatres, community halls, and arenas; music festivals; pubs, bars &amp; restaurants; non-traditional venues; and presenters \/ arts organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/9\/embed?mid=1DdxbcP1PFkGD4E4a-RXaerN2tA0n1pua&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"700\" height=\"480\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is very much a work in progress! Many thanks to Nick Maturo from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec-elan.org\/\">English Language Arts Network (ELAN)<\/a>  and Glenn Patterson from the <a href=\"https:\/\/qahn.org\/\">Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network<\/a> for their contributions to this project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facts &amp; figures about Quebec&#8217;s Anglophone population<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>There is no consensus on how to define and measure the size of Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s English-speaking communities.&nbsp;Depending on the definition used, the population varies between 657,078 and 1,103,475 persons according to the 2016 Canadian Census (or between 8.1 per cent and 13.7 per cent of the total population).&nbsp;The narrowest definition is limited to people with&nbsp;English&nbsp;as their sole mother tongue. The broadest definition includes those for whom English is the first official language spoken, which takes into account non-native speakers who use English with greater or equal frequency than&nbsp;French.
